The Best Thermostat Settings for Summer

Summers in the Minneapolis area can get hot – add humidity to that and the summer weather is bound to have you reaching for your thermostat. While it’s
tempting to blast your AC during these hot summer months, it’s important to keep efficiency in mind. We’ve all gotten that one electric bill that made us understand why dad always guarded the thermostat like none other. Luckily, there are a few thermostat tips you can follow to strike the perfect balance between cool comfort and efficiency this summer.

The “At Home” Setting

The “at home” setting is the temperature you want to set your thermostat to while you and your family are spending a significant amount of time at home. This time typically includes mornings, evenings, and weekends. The most efficient temperature you can set your thermostat at during this period is 78 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature allows you to enjoy a cool home as well as a cool electric bill. This is not a “set it and forget it” temperature, however. Depending on your schedule, you will want to adjust your thermostat to a different temperature when you’re away or asleep. When you’re at home though, this is the perfect setting for energy efficiency and comfort.

The “At Work” Setting

Most of us in the Minneapolis area are gone at least eight hours a day for work, which means your home is sitting empty. While there’s little point to cooling an empty house, you actually don’t want to turn your AC off during this time. Once the heat and humidity set in, your AC will have to work even harder to get the temperature back down to a comfortable level. Instead, you’ll want to set your thermostat to be about seven to ten degrees warmer than your “at home” setting while you’re gone. This means the temperature should be set to about 85 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit while you’re at work or out for the day.

If that sounds hot, don’t worry – once you’re home, you can set your thermostat back to the “at home” setting of 78. Depending on the type of thermostat you have, you can also set it to adjust the temperature back to 78 about 30-60 minutes before your arrival home.

The “Bedtime” Setting

When you fall asleep, your body temperature naturally drops. That means you can raise the temperature that your thermostat is set at without sacrificing comfort. For the bedtime setting, you will want to add around four to five degrees. This means when you’re ready for bed, you should set your thermostat to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Again, depending on your thermostat, you can set it to automatically adjust back down to 78 when you wake up, so you won’t even notice that the temperature was higher all night.

While these setting may just seem like minor tweaks, they can have a big impact on your electric bill during the Minnesota summer months. For example, it’s noted that reducing your temperature from 78 to 72 – just six degrees – can cost you up to 47% more in energy costs!
